Review : Great improvement, frustrating lens hood
The MkI version of this lens has been my "workhorse" lens for years--usually my default lens-of-choice if I was headed out without a bagful of lenses. My biggest reservation of moving to the MkII was the filter size change from 77mm to 82mm, since I have a large collection of 77mm filters.
Yes, the MkII is noticeably sharper. But since there have been many detailed reviews on the optics of the MKII, I'll focus on the ergonomics of it.
The giant, deep round hood of the MkI has been replaced by a much shallower hood. Even though the MkII has a hood locking mechanism, it came off and hit the ground twice in my very first outing with the lens. I tried reversing the unlock button to the other side since I suspected it was bouncing into me and unlocking itself, but it still managed to fall off. Also the new shallower hood offers less scratch protection to the glass--I always liked how the glass of the MkI was protected deep inside that big hood and I managed to use it...
