Review : After 7 Years on the Shelf I Underestimated This fine lens for landscapes
After collecting a whole series of pro type lenses I can only conclude the canon 18-55mm is underrated. For the price and the fact it is so compact/light this lens is a great option. I recently used to take landscape and still shots of dilapidated buildings. The sharpness/detail is excellent and compares to my Sigma 24-70mm when used with my 5d under normal daylight conditions/with tripod dawn to dusk.
Unless you are an extreme pixel counter, for all practical purposes you will not be able tell the difference in photo quality for small and medium sized prints vs pro models. What I particularly like is the fact i can replace with a quality used lens for about 50 dollars/ my rebel XT for about 175 = $225.. VS about $1500 used for my 5d/sigma 2.8 24-70 combo. An added plus is the fact filters are far cheaper for the 58mm vs 77/82mm (about half the price)
Why so underrated? I think part of the reason is more experienced photographers are more apt to upgrade with the more...
