Review : An amazing sub-L lens
I have recently expanded my focus to video-as well as photography. Given the new emphasis on video, my Canon 17-40mm F4 was not cutting it...a bit too soft for my liking. So after a bit of research and deliberation I opted to go prime and purchase this lens. I was hoping for the best, but knew I was taking a risk given the little feedback available. First impressions:
* Physical construction is really solid. Perhaps shy of an "L" series, but much better than the Canon 50mm at f1.4, for example.
* This lens is tack sharp! Not quite to the color standard of the Canon 24mm f1.4 "L", but a negligible difference.
* Image stabilization works wonders, especially at around 1/30th of a second shutter. I hear a lot of people talk about how wide focal lengths, such as the 24mm don't need IS. It is true that wide angles marginalize the shake, but from a video point of view, IS is necessary. Also, stabilization software seems to struggle with focal lengths below 50mm. An...
